Meet the composer for Battle Chasers - Clark Powell

We've already blogged about how much we dig game music at Airship. We love true "video game" soundtracks that leave you whistling the tunes long after you're done playing the game.

Meet the guy who is going to create that for Battle Chasers: Clark Powell! A relative unknown (for now) that hooked us with his unique and deeply powerful sounds.

Along with getting to know him, check out a new track on the hot and fresh Battle Chasers OST section of the website!

How did you get into making music?

It happened on accident! When I really started writing songs in earnest I was at a formal music school for cello performance, but I left without finishing my degree because I was so much more engaged with creating my own sounds. It was sort of an obsession that took over my life by surprise.

What instruments do you play and which is your favorite?

I play a little bit of bass guitar, and enough piano to scrape by, but the big one is the cello. I’ve been playing that for most of my life, and it’s a sound that makes its way into a ton of my music.

What are your thoughts on composing game music versus personal or video works?

I think maybe it’s the interactivity in games that leads to this, but as a player I end up forming these powerful emotional bonds with the soundtracks of games I love. A great game with a great score is like a recipe for instant nostalgia! I’ve always wanted to have a hand in creating that kind of magic.

What games are you playing right now?

Lately I’ve been totally lost in the world of The Witcher 3, I’ve been sitting down to play almost every day. I also keep coming back to Diablo III, that game is way more fun than it has any right to be.

The big one: give us your top five game soundtracks.

In no particular order, the games that come to mind are Dear Esther, Metroid 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Katamari Damacy, and the live tracks from Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean.

New Creature - You Called It (on Twitter)!

A few days ago we posed a fun question on the @battle_chasers twitter feed: what classic fantasy creature would you like to see in the upcoming Battle Chasers RPG?

There were a lot of fun answers (and more may show up in the future), but one kept getting mentioned: the Beholder. It was a popular answer, and one we echoed - so here's our own take on it. The next Battle Chasers creature is...!

Evil Eye

Top five game soundtracks?

We're planning to introduce our very talented (and up-and-coming) music guy in a future update, which got us thinking and debating: what are the best game soundtracks ever? Game music is something we're crazy passionate about here, so we decided to share our favorite game soundtracks and would love to hear yours - IF you can pick a top five, and rank them. Tough rules, but that's why the choices matter. We also avoided cheating by saying things like "every Castlevania" or "every Final Fantasy", even if it would've been true.

And yes, Steve cheated with his honorable mentions.

When will then be now? Soon.

Welcome to the development blog for Battle Chasers! Here we'll be telling the tale of our new RPG's creation, filled with fresh progress updates on the game and comic, as well as the activities at our studio. We'll also give some personal insight into the creators we have working here; as an example, you'll be the first to know when Steve sets a new record for the number of patties he fit on his #baconranchquesoburger at lunch.

And while we can't wait to pull the covers off the game completely, we'd like to leave you with an example of the kind of info we plan to share here by premiering our first in game character.

And who else would it be but Gully?

One of the first concepts depicting how Gully might appear in game

Some action sketches showing off the power of her mighty gauntlets

A loose and gestural mock-up showing signs of the true warrior within...
